Funeral services for Valerie Genae May, age 38, of Harrisonburg will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 14, 2023, from the sanctuary of Rosefield Baptist Church at Rosefield with Bro. Jon Lord officiating and Elijah Boothe assisting. The May family will host visitation at the church from 11:00 AM until time of service at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow in the Rosefield Cemetery under direction of Riser and Son Funeral Home of Columbia.
Valerie Genae May was born on December 9, 1984, in LeGrange, Texas, to the union of her parents, Marion Keith May and Anita Genae Hodges. She passed from this life on April 11, 2023, after an extended hospital stay from a stroke she suffered on February 24, 2023.
Valerie was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents: Wilber Gene Hodges and step grandmother, Georgia Hodges; maternal great-grandparents: Otis Clyde and Verena McKee and Sam Wilbert and Moease Hodges; paternal grandfather, Waylon Elmo May; paternal great-grandparents: Marion Mayfield and Gertie May, Lee Franklin and Addie Quaid; uncles, Raymond Gene Hodges and Marcus Lee May.
Those left to cherish her memory include her two children whom she loved dearly, Anna Genae Butts and Bryce Bradley Butts; father, Marion May and wife, Lonell; mother, Anita Sones and step-father, Harold; grandmothers, Mary Elizabeth May and Irene Bollinger; sisters: Chandice Boothe and husband, Elijah, and Brandi Bordelon; brothers: Andrew Sones, his wife Claire and their newborn daughter, Rylee; Christopher Jordan and his wife, Brittany; Brandon May; and Jamie May and his wife, Katie.
Other close family members with fond memories include cousin, Macy Barker and her husband, Justin with their children, Lainey and Corbin; cousin, Leighton Hodges; special niece and nephew, Aubrey Rose Boothe and Wyatt Boothe.
Valerie loved to walk on the lake bank with Aubrey and Wyatt, hunting arrowhead chips for her art projects. She had a host of uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews from her dad’s side of the family as well.
Valerie loved her job working with the elderly at Catahoula Council on Aging. She was a very sweet, giving and loving person to everyone that met her. She had a very special eye for antiques. Valerie enjoyed showing off her collection of antique finds as well as the art pieces she created.
She will be missed by all who knew her!
