Teara Gay (Gunn) Carr and Curtis Houston Carr, Jr. passed away together on October 4, 2025, in Hampton, Virginia, where they had lived aboard their beloved boat, Gypsy Sol, for the past six years. As in life, they were side by side—bound by a love that carried them through every season and every sea.
Teara was born on May 22, 1954, in Columbia, Louisiana, and Curtis was born on October 4, 1948, in San Bernardino, California. They were married on November 8, 1980, and from that day forward, they were inseparable—partners in love, laughter, and adventure for nearly forty-five years. Those who knew them will tell you they were, quite simply, eternally in love.
Together, they raised their three daughters — Jacquie Carr, Sunni Harbert, and Marjorie Irizarry — and shared in the life of Teara’s daughter, Jennifer Gordy. They also fiercely loved their sons-in-law, Erick Harbert, Marcus Irizarry, and Christopher Stogner. Their family grew to include thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild, each of whom brought them immense joy.
They made their home wherever they were together before fulfilling a lifelong dream of living on the water. During their years aboard, they sailed up and down the Eastern Seaboard and took occasional trips to the Caribbean. Curtis always had a boat project underway, and Teara was never far—supervising, chatting, and ensuring everything turned out just right. Together, they built a life filled with stories, sunshine, and sea spray.
Both were active members of the Salty Dog Sailing Association, where they found deep friendship and a community of fellow dreamers. They traveled the country to visit their many grandchildren, and no matter where they dropped anchor, they left behind laughter, generosity, and warmth.
Teara was preceded in death by her parents, Delaine Riser Gunn and Arvil Gunn, and her brothers, Michael and Clay Gunn. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Curtis H. Carr, Sr., and his sister, Karen Basher.
Those fortunate enough to have known them will remember their partnership as a shining example of love that weathered every storm, always together.
The Carr Family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on November 22, 2025 at the Columbia chapel of Riser & Son Funeral Home beginning at 10:00 AM. Friends may begin to call at 9:00 AM. Family and Friends are invited to share memories of and reflections of time past with Teara and Curt.
