Phyllis Annabell Tucker

Phyllis Annabell Norman Tucker, age 84 of Columbia, was born June 21, 1937, in Houston, Texas and passed from this life August 26, 2021 at her home in Columbia. While Phyllis had a varied work history including opening her own business, The Wine Table in the mid-70’s, she retired from Entergy working as a customer service representative. She was a lifelong member of United Methodist Church and most recently a beloved member the Hebert United Methodist Church. Phyllis loved to be involved in organizations centered on helping others, particularly involving unequal treatment. She was a passionate advocate for women's rights, participating in innumerable protests and marches advancing equal rights for women, at one time president of the Texas NOW Chapter (National Organization of Women), working very hard to pass legislation for the equal rights amendment. She worked with battered women in Texas and delivered meals to those in need locally here in Hebert. Phyllis was a leader revered by many, unafraid to take stances and actions in defense of those who could not defend themselves. Unsurprisingly, she was also an animal lover and supported rescue organizations throughout her life. Additionally, Phyllis adored playing the bass clarinet in the Columbia Riverside Band, liked fishing, bowling and thoroughly enjoyed yard work. She loved her family and her dog, "Elsie."

Those left to cherish her memory include her best friend & lifelong companion, Virginia Gates; her daughter, Lynn Scates (Rob) of Rockport, TX; sons: Blaine Tucker (Greta) of Rosharon, TX and Greg Tucker (Sim) of Houston, TX; grandchildren: Carolyn Tucker, Nick Tucker, Aurel Tucker, and Allen Tucker; wife-in-law: Diane Tucker
