Constance Brunt McCants a long-time resident of Columbia, LA died peacefully in her sleep in her home on February 17, 2022. She was 86.

Connie was born on October 18,1935 in Jacksonville, FL to her parents, Dr. Charles and Grace Moberly Brunt. The family moved to Louisiana and Connie and her sister Julie grew up in Iota. Connie graduated from the Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans in 1955. While in school in New Orleans she met and married her husband John Collinsworth McCants. The McCants’ moved to Monroe and finally in 1960 settled in Columbia, LA where Connie raised her two children and took up a career in public health.  

Connie was a dedicated public health professional and nurse. She was a hard worker and one who kept constantly busy. Connie was head of the Caldwell Parish Health Unit for many years. Her service to the residents of Caldwell Parish was recognized by her receipt of the prestigious LPHA Meritorious Award given by the Louisiana Public Health Association “to those individuals who stand as role models and supporters of improving public health and welfare to the citizens of Louisiana.”

Connie loved animals and had numerous dogs and cats as her constant companions over the period of her life. Connie was small in stature, but her personality and life force were large. Connie loved to gather with friends and family where there was always music, food, drinks and laughter.

Connie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Peter Martin of Mill Valley, CA; her son and daughter in-law, Jack and Jennifer McCants III of Jackson, MS and three grandchildren: Peter Sinnott Martin, Ian McCants Martin, and Eleanor Grace McCants.

A memorial will take place on Saturday, February 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Riser & Son Funeral Home in Columbia, LA. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Connie’s life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Saving Paws of Caldwell Parish Animal Shelter.
