Betty Wayne Bennett

Betty Wayne Bennett was born November 23, 1936, in Columbia, Louisiana to the union of her parents, Paul Wilson and Winnie Walker Wilson, and after an extended illness she passed away at her home in Columbia surrounded by her loving family on September 8, 2023.

Betty married "Joe" Felix Bennett on October 27, 1953, and was blessed with three children. She was employed at St. Gabriel Womens' Prison in St. Gabriel, Louisiana before she and Joe bought and operated Dutchtown Grocery. After several years, Joe and Betty retired and moved to Columbia, Louisiana and in 1978 they purchased the "Old Fern Place" in Grayson, Louisiana which was later nicknamed "Bennett Hill."  Betty then worked at the Louisiana State School, managed at the time by Aaron McGuire and Bobbie Perkins. In 1985, Joe and Betty purchased Kountry Korner Grocery in the Ward 5 Community where they lived and served the Community for 10 years.

Betty was a dedicated member of Outreach Baptist Church until her health prevented her from attending. She loved to cook and was always feeding her family and all the friends her children would bring home. She was known for her famous tea cakes. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She leaves behind an enormous legacy through her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Joe Bennett; and her brothers: Hollis Wilson, James Wilson, and Jackie Wilson.

Left to cherish a lifetime of memories are her two daughters: Glenda Bennett of Columbia and Connie Edmonston (Gary) of Grayson; her son, Greg Bennett (Linda) of Grayson; brothers: David Wilson (Kathy), Larry Wilson, and Ronnie Wilson; sisters: Diane Middleton (Billy), Debra Wilson Owens, and Carolyn Girod; fourteen grandchildren: Jason Anderson, Melissa Anderson Meredith (John), David Anderson Jr., Mandy Edmonston Naron (Ken), Amy Fabre (Tim), Gary Edmonston Jr., Keely Kearns, Nikki Bennett, Tracy Bennett Leblanc (Josh), Shelly Bennett (Jerry), Josh Bennett (Hannah), Kris Hatten, Jeffrey Hatten, and Johnny Hatten; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; very special friends, Jimmy and JoAnn Goodman; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Anderson, David Anderson Jr., John Meredith, Reed Anderson, Josh LeBlanc, Josh Bennett, and Gary Edmonston Jr. Honorary pallbearers are David Earl Varnell and Steve May..

The family would like to extend a special thank you to St. Joseph Hospice for their love and care.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, September 11, 2023, from the chapel of Riser and Son Funeral Home, Columbia with Bro. Shane Duke officiating. Interment will follow at Welcome Home Cemetery in Grayson. The family will have visitation on Monday prior to the service from 10 AM until 11 AM, at the funeral home.
